October isn’t just 31 days of Halloween: it’s 31 days of oral care – it’s Dental Hygiene Awareness Month! It’s been around for well over a decade now, and the goal is to reemphasize the importance of consistent brushing, flossing, and other good habits. If you’d like to participate, then there’s no time like the present to implement the below tips.
Tip #1: Be Mindful of Timing
You may be brushing, but are you brushing long enough? To remove plaque, food particles, and other debris from your mouth, you need to practice this oral hygiene habit for two full minutes twice a day. Similarly, you need to rinse with mouthwash for the instructed amount of time (usually between 30 and 60 seconds).
Tip #2: Floss Every Day
Remember, your toothbrush can’t reach the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth or between your teeth; you need floss for that. That’s why it’s of the utmost importance that you floss daily – no exceptions. If you’re having trouble making this a habit because you don’t like traditional string floss, talk to your dentist about using an alternative, like a water flosser!
Tip #3: Schedule Your Next Checkup and Cleaning
Your biannual visits are important for numerous reasons, including that it allows your dental team to screen for oral cancer, check for cavities, and remove tartar buildup. So, there’s no time like the present to make sure your next dental checkup and cleaning is on the calendar. Also, if it’s been more than six months since your last appointment, schedule one before the end of the year!
Tip #4: Stock Up on Nutrient-Dense Foods
As you already know, what you eat impacts the health of your teeth and gums. If you eat sugary foods in excess, you’re more likely to experience decay. If you eat nutrient-dense foods with every meal, then your body will have the vitamins it needs to keep your bones healthy, your teeth strong, and your gums infection-free. So, the next time you go shopping, load your cart with fruits, vegetables, and other smile-friendly foods!
Tip #5: Chew Sugar-Free Gum Between Meals
Ideally, you’d be able to brush your teeth after each meal. Of course, that’s not always realistic between hectic work schedules, travel days, and the like. The good news is that there is an alternative: chewing on sugar-free gum. Although it’s not a replacement for brushing, it can help rinse away food particles from your teeth, reducing your chances of developing cavities in the process.
