Today, veneers are one of the most sought-after cosmetic dental treatments. Well known for their ability to address noticeable gaps, stains, chips, and other imperfections in as little as two appointments, it’s not hard to see why either! Like many other smile-enhancing solutions, this service has come a long way since its beginning. To take a deeper look at the history of veneers, read on.
1920s – The Start of Veneers
It’s fitting that veneers are responsible for so many celebrity smiles since this cosmetic dental treatment got its start on Hollywood sets. In the 1920s, a dentist in California named Charles Pincus began using temporary veneers to enhance the actors’ smiles. The special adhesive was designed to only stay in place for an hour or two, but it wasn’t long until the people in front of the camera were asking how to make their teeth permanently whiter and brighter.
1950s – Noteworthy Improvements Begin
While the 1930s and 1940s saw few advancements, there were several noteworthy improvements to veneers in the 1950s. One of the most significant ones was in 1959. At this time, Dr. Michael Buonocore introduced etching, which created a stronger bonding surface for the veneers to adhere to. This is important because denture adhesive was used prior to this, resulting in very little adhesion.
1980s to Now – The Era of Modern Veneers
In the 1980s, techniques from R.J Simonsen and J.R Calamia created an even stronger bonding surface. That combined with the high-quality materials is largely why veneers can last for 15+ years with proper care! Now, more and more patients are choosing to conceal dental imperfections with lifelike, long-lasting, and durable veneers.
From their start on film sets in Hollywood to today, veneers have come a long way over the years. Fortunately, advancements in techniques and technology have only made them better. So, if you’re unhappy with your smile due to imperfections like discolored, misshapen, or misaligned teeth, there’s no time like the present to schedule a consultation with your cosmetic dentist to find out if you’re a candidate!
