Typically, wisdom teeth make an appearance between the ages of 17 and 21. As the third set of molars, they often result in more harm than good, which is why dentists recommend having them extracted. But does everyone have wisdom teeth? It’s a good question! To learn the answer, read on.
Does Everyone Have Wisdom Teeth?
In short, the answer is “no.” In fact, it’s estimated that between 5% and 37% of people are missing at least one or more of their wisdom teeth. While it’s believed the main cause of this phenomenon is genetic, diet and environment could also play a role.
It’s important to keep in mind, however, that just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there. It’s quite common for them to get impacted underneath the gumline, causing problems underneath the surface. That’s why it’s so important to get X-rays taken once a year with your dentist. This allows them to monitor their development and intervene the moment they become problematic.
Does Everyone Need to Get Their Wisdom Teeth Removed?
If you have wisdom teeth, there is a possibility that they won’t need to be removed. If yours come in perfectly straight and don’t cause overcrowding, then your dentist will likely just continue to monitor them throughout the years. However, if you begin to experience or are at-risk of experiencing the below, then you should talk to your dentist about having them removed:
- Tooth pain
- Swelling/redness
- Impacted teeth
- Oral infections
- Cavities
- Overcrowding
Do Wisdom Teeth Extractions Hurt?
Fortunately, the answer is no. That’s because the first step is always the same – whether you’re having one tooth extracted or several – numb your mouth. Once you’re completely comfortable, your dental team will begin working to remove the problematic tooth or teeth. Following the procedure, you might feel some discomfort and soreness. Luckily, these can easily be alleviated with a cold compress, an OTC pain reliever, and a diet free of hard, sticky, and crunchy foods.
While some patients don’t have wisdom teeth, the majority do. If you’re a part of the latter and your third molars have begun to cause complications, then don’t wait – schedule an appointment to have them extracted today!
